Cuckoo trail

The Cuckoo Trail is a 14-mile footpath and cycleway which runs from Hampden Park to Heathfield in East Sussex. It follows the old rail line, left when the railways were shut in the sixties.

The name for the trail derives from Heffle which is the old local name for Heathfield in Sussex. Heathfield have a Cuckoo Fair each April, dating back from the 14th century, (not continuous)to mark the arrival of spring. In days gone by Dame Heffle used to release a cuckoo from her basket to open the fair. Hence the Cuckoo Trail.

We had a bracing trek along the Heathfield to Horam stretch of the trail this morning. Another Southern England gem.
