A Ladder to the Sky by John Boyne
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
This was clever, clever storytelling. John Boyne never fails to take me by surprise with the twists and turns in his narrative and with his characters.
Such an emotional roller coaster. I hated Maurice so much that at times I could barely find it in myself to read on; barely be a witness to the havoc and destruction he wreaked. I hated him to the end; this anti hero who literally lets nothing get in the way of his ambition. This said I was gripped by the book. I loved the fleeting reference to Maude Avery and Like to the Lark. I liked Daniel and Edith and I liked the fact that he was finally tripped up by his own ego, by his continuing self-absorption and by someone as duplicitous as himself.
